I felt a bit uncomfortable with ribbons in the initial days… and I used to remove them… But now everything is fine with me..
I made the switch very easily. I found helpful tools at http://www.openoffice.org and now I don’t deal with ribbons any longer.
Alternatively, you can double-click to hide or show the ribbon.
